Everything has changed in 2020. The world has turned upside-down by a globe pandemic. What do we do? As a jeweller, what can we do in this ‘magic’ 2020?

As curator and art director Herman Sun said ‘We are living in different areas around the world, but we do believe jewellery. I believe contemporary art jewellery sometimes was more than jewellery itself, it is a powerful spirit more than the objects.’

Under this concept, we start this project. We invite contemporary jewellers around the world film their professional practice and edit into a documentary. The video will be showen during the Beijing Design Week 2020, which is also the 600 years’ birthday of Temple of Heaven (Est.1420) and the final stop of the Growth & Evolution International Jewellery Exhibition. (It also available on: www.dbc.red/)

A documentary about contemporary jewellery broadcasts to the public is unprecedented in China. And yet every video we receive is a unique and complete project from all talents. It puts a lot of pressure on me as the producer to bring all them together in a single film.

Instead of just showcasing the work itself I concentrate on revealing the practicing process from the very beginning. I hope it can make a better understanding of what is contemporary art jewellery for our audiences. I also invite a young music talent(Chuan Luo) create this water like music for this project.

Every project starts from somewhere. It may be meandering in an anonymous alley or a rowing experience along the river delta. From tides to trees, from rock to metal, artists extract fragments of memory and cutting into the new jewels to be seen.

There are pearls made from books, rocks created by chemistry formula, necklaces comprehend with the human body, they are voices from every artist. Their voices for the hope and future.

“The theme ‘Hope & Future’ is as old as humanity. It immediately reminded me of Pandora’s box, her curiosity let disasters escape and spread over the earth, but hope remains in the box. My brooch grew in my hands, branching gently outward and billowing back in, curious about the future of the world.”

“ ‘Anattata’ means everything is non-existent, like the two sides of the Möbius strip, but there actually is no separation; ‘hope’ and ‘future’ are not distinct and together form our beings.”

“ The reason I’m in love with contemporary art jewellery is that it’s jewellery but also more than just jewellery. A small decoration on the body but contain strong power, special meaning and unique story. ”

“The use of transformed PET (polyethylene terephthalate) into jewelry pieces is an attempt to reflect on current values concerning environmental care and the consequent quality of life.”

“For me, making contemporary jewelry is like a small liberation, it is taking out all those demons that one carries inside, because throughout our experiences, because life is not wonderful, life really is a feeling, a walk, you can feel life , feel death, feel joy, sadness, generate inner peace, for me it is a way to get those emotions or energy and transform it into forms of contemporary jewelry pieces.”

“Invented place” — Juanjo García Martín

“I try to manage the language of emptiness and fullness to put my pieces in tension and poise, to explore the relationship between object and scale. Working with scale, I adapt tectonic to human anatomy.”

——Khajornsak Nakpan

“Chada Din” — Khajornsak Nakpan

“I design my jewelry as sculptures without ever losing sight of the fact that they must have a connection with the body and that the person must move and live with them.”

——Isabelle Carpentier

“This work is about self-love and self-acceptance. It’s a small research about being a human, an effort to accept and embrace it with all the vulnerability, fragility and imperfection.”
