After finishing her Master in Architecture four years ago, in which she gathered experience within Spain, Germany and China, Empar experienced a necessity for crafts in her life. She decided to aim her career into a more creative and handcrafted direc- tion, so she started to study Design in Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where she just had her Bachelor’s Degree from.
She discovered stonework during her exchange semester in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, and she got totally fascinated about this material. What she most loves about carving stone is the power of transforming such a resistant and heavy material into delicate and lightweight jewellery.
(Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design)学习设计,她刚刚在那里获得了学士学位。
她在德国伊达-奥伯斯坦交换学期发现了石雕艺术,她对这种材料完全着迷了。她最喜欢雕刻石的地方是它能把一种坚硬而厚重的材料变成精致而轻巧的首饰。
作品和设计说明
Empar Juanes has no desire to fall off a cliff, but she enjoys balancing on the edge. This is how she approaches her jewellery, constantly testing the limits of the material. Her work in stone is about resistance, tension and fragility where risk-taking is es- sential. In order to live fully, Juanes says we must have the courage to be vulnerable. Studying the matter of our personal space and opening a strong, direct, word-less dialogue between the wearer and the observer, “Tensed” is a tribute both to fragility and to life.

Can a stone be flexible? .
I discovered stone can be slightly flexible, depending on the stone internal structure and geometry. This unexpected characte- ristic of stone’s materiality fascinated me. I set the stone playing with the tension of the metal, visualazing this risky but exciting phenomenon.
The natural stone pattern, as it would be a second skin with its freckles, the space in between the wearer and the piece and in between the wearer and the viewer, with its fragile aura materializes the concept of personal space and it’s vulnerability in an abstract and minimalistic way.
Piece 2: Fragile, it contains emotions.

Original texts, sketches , thoughts, struggles, decisions and emotions on a semi-transparent fragile paper during my thesis research are folded and hand-bound with a Japanese paper thread covered with real gold. The fact the pages are folded, makes it unreadable at the first impression although words, sentences and feelings can be perceived on a closer look. Valuing my own conclusions, some parts are printed in gold using tradiional screen-printing technique.
As jewelry artist it is generally seen as a weakness to show insecurity. I position myself against this believe because I think to doubt and to be insecure is intrinsic of an artist’s nature. Should we not, in our roll as artists question everything? Is this process not totally linked to insecurities and struggles? I do think so and I see beauty on it. My aim with this book was to show a bit of my artistic process and visualize the foggy thoughts and complex emotional process that I experience behind a finished piece.
